“Los Alamos” Square
The scene shows the layout of the original square (around the 17th century), with the hermitage of Carmen and the shrine, a place that marked one of the entrances and exits of the town, specifically the road to Fuenteheridos.
It is named after the two parallel rows of poplars that used to form an avenue leading to the spring, the origin of the current Fountain of Our Lady of Carmen.
In the early twentieth century, due to the expansion of the Barrio de la Fuente, the council decided to improve and beautify the place with the construction of the current Paseo de Nuestra Señora del Carmen (Promenade of Our Lady of Carmen).
A voluntary collection was made in August 1907, collecting a total of 1,468 pesetas. With that amount, the local corporation was notified that it had a large part of the funds necessary to begin the construction of the promenade.
In September, the primary budget was spent, and the municipal architect was asked to make a new one to finish the work. The project was suspended until May 1908, when Mayor José Conde Garrido decreed the conclusion of the work by putting it out to public auction, and the municipal architect was awarded the contract for 2,750 pesetas, the same amount that had been budgeted in September of the previous year. In August 1908 the Paseo de Nuestra Señora del Carmen was completed.
The following inscription was made in commemoration: “PROMENADE OF OUR LADY OF CARMEN. FINANCED BY PUBLIC DONATIONS AND BY THE CITY COUNCIL, WHEN THE MAYOR WAS MR. JOSÉ CONDE GARRIDO. YEAR 1908.”
